regulation, yes or no?
After reviewing many blog posts this one seemed to catch my attention and interest the most. Should the industry be regulated or should porn be left up to the actors and the crew? Well, this question could be strongly debated by both sides. Porn is definitely something that is over the edge, so how can you regulate it without disposing of it? On the other hand it is both offensive and vulgar to some people, and certain scenes may offend some.
My viewpoint on this matter is there must be set rules but when it comes to condoms leave it up to the actor in the movie. It is any person’s choice to protect themselves sexually, a porn star is just as much in that category. Their job included have sex with multiple partners in a span of however many days is necessary. The risks that exist when one does not use a condom are both known and well studied. If someone is in the porn industry they should be aware of all the risks they are taking, and make a decision if they want to continue this job regardless of what may or may not come from it.
I both disagree with hlm5 when it is stated that young adults may follow what a porn star does and wear a condom if they do. Porn stars are not intended to be role models, and should never be given that job. That is an unfair statement to make, and if that’s why the rule is created then the industry and society need to take a step back and look at who they are viewing as role models. If Oprah Winfrey gets on her show and states that she doesn’t use a condom that is another story. If a porn star wanted to be a role model for the practice of safe sex, performing sex on camera in various ways with various partners is the wrong way to go about it.

porn and the economy
After watching the lectures titled “American Porn” I realized what a huge impact the pornography industry has on the economy. It can be compared to cigarettes but in a much less dramatic effect. The pornography business it linked to many other industries such as television, internet, movie and magazine to name a few, these industries are linked and owned by even larger industries. That largest of the companies doesn’t only own pornography related idea. For example Vivid Video is owned by Direct TV which is owned by GE. Why is this such a big deal? 4 million homes a month watch vivid video. This makes their montly intake huge, which effects GE which has a major effect on the economy. If pornography was to be taken off of the internet, television, movies and magazines the economy would drastically slip and fall apart.
I compared it to cigarettes also because not only is it addicting, and talked poorly about, but it will never end. People argue for cigarettes to be banned but the economy would fall apart.
Porn or a Trailer
In Lecture 13 there was one major statement that grabbed my attention. It was made by a woman who said that these porn stars don’t have the option of going to Harvard and that its porn or a trailer, porn or a white hat and jobs of that nature. I greatly disagree with this statement. I am in no way bashing on porn stars, if they want to pursue and continue a career in porn, that’s their lifestyle and decision. I do on the other hand have a problem with the woman who exclaim that they hate their job and its the only option for them to provide for themselves and in some case others.
Yes, If you didn’t graduate high school in today’s society and/or graduate college it is very difficult to find a job that pays good money, but there are other options. People can attend a community college and work on the side, although its a difficult situation its done all the time. After they can begin their career. Sometimes taking the easy way out screws you in the end. If something happens to any of these porn stars such as an accident that messes up their bodies or a pregnancy, they are out of work. In the porn industry you can’t still collect money for not receiving work, you look good and your well liked your booked for the next shoot.
Basically, if someone in an office job has to take off work because of an accident that hinders their ability, under law they must still be contemplated for their job. One example is taking off for a pregnancy; you cannot be fired because a woman or a man has the right to take off for the sake of their child. People in the porn industry don’t have that leisure. They work per scene, per movie or magazine pictorial.

todays most popular profession
As I watch each lecture I think to myself what constitutes pornography. I have heard many different answers such as penetration, a nipple or even just a sexual inference. Does pornography have a definition or is it based on your own personal beliefs?
In my opinion there is no straight answer to this question. There is always someone who thinks a movie scene is too vulgar, or a magazine has too much skin showing, either male or female. So, this is when the question arises, if someone tapes themselves and a partner having sex, is this pornography. I do no not think that it is pornography if it’s meant for the person and their partner to share; it doesn’t make them a pornographer. When the intentions of the video are to share with others and create media bliss, this is when it becomes a pornographic video.
This is the same for nude pictures. If the pictures are for someone’s personal viewing it’s not pornography, just curiosity. People need to loosen up and stop judging. If everyone who took a naked picture or created a sex tape was a porn star, that professional would surpass all others.
who’s watching?
Lecture 7 stressed the point that when porn was first widely introduced to was only available to the elite, being a form of erotica rather than vulgarity. For example the book “Sweet Sixteen” was acceptable when it was overpriced but when it became available to the poor, it was no longer okay.
In today’s society pornography is viewed by all different ages, genders and sexual preferences. There are many different type of magazines, websites and movies for people’s enjoyments for example, Playboy, Hustler and Huncho. What everyone seems to enjoy about this wide variety is its all secret. No one needs to make their activities known and face the threat of any embarrassment. Cyberporn has now become the most popular way to view porn, and sex is now the number one word typed into search engines.
The most shocking part of who’s viewing porn in the internet, is its not he group you would think. Most people are probably thinking horny teenage boys, but this isn’t true. Statistics say “The typical Christian dabbler in cyberporn is male, 30-55 years old, married with children, well-educated, economically comfortable and frequently employed in a profession such as information science, medicine, commerce, law, the ministry and so on.” This is a shocking revelation considering it can be your local doctor or minister. So is it a good thing that pornography is so secret today, or does this make the world more vulnerable?
My answer to this question is that what someone does in the privacy of their own home it their own business, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their professional life. If everyone was judged on what they did on their own in their own time, there would be way too much chaos. Yes, it is disturbing to think of your doctor sitting at home watching porn on the computer, but it’s not something that is going to stop. Pornography has become a way of life, and is here to stay.
